Why Tiwanaku is special
Tiwanaku was the great capital of the Andes before the Inca — the heart of a civilisation that spread across the southern altiplano between roughly AD 375 and 700. Its Gateway of the Sun, raised temples, carved monoliths and the precision-cut blocks of Puma Punku make it one of the most important and most intriguing ancient sites in South America, set under the huge sky of the altiplano near Lake Titicaca.
The practicalities of the day
It's an accessible day trip: about 1.5 hours from La Paz each way, so tours run comfortably within a day. There's no simple do-it-yourself route, which is why guided day trips are the standard way to go — they handle the transfer, the entrances and, crucially, the interpretation that brings the ruins to life.
Go guided, and mind the altitude
More than at most sites, a guide matters here: the astronomy of the Kalasasaya and the engineering of Puma Punku are easy to miss without one. And because Tiwanaku sits at around 3,850 metres, acclimatise for a day or two first, move slowly, and keep hydrated as you walk the site.
Come prepared, and consider Titicaca
