The Kalasasaya's raised court

The Kalasasaya is a vast rectangular platform, over 100 metres long, walled with tall standing stone pillars set at regular intervals and entered by a monumental stone stairway on its eastern side. Its corners and axes are aligned in a way many researchers link to the equinoxes and solstices, making it plausibly a site of astronomical observation as well as a ceremonial one, though exactly how that alignment was used in practice is inferred from the stones rather than recorded in any surviving account. Inside its walls stand two of Tiwanaku's finest carved monoliths and, near its edge, the Gate of the Sun itself.

The temple of stone faces

Just below the Kalasasaya's level sits the semi-subterranean temple, a sunken rectangular court reached by a short stone stairway, whose retaining walls are studded with more than 175 individually carved stone heads, each set into the wall on its own projecting stone tenon. No single explanation is universally agreed on: they may represent conquered or allied peoples paying tribute, venerated ancestors, or simply the different ethnic groups that together made up Tiwanaku society. Whatever their intended meaning, the repetition of dozens of distinct carved faces staring inward from every wall gives the court one of the most striking atmospheres anywhere on the site.

The Akapana platform

The Akapana is a stepped platform roughly 200 metres across, originally built in seven terraced levels with internal stone-lined drainage channels that carefully managed rainwater running off its upper surfaces — a genuine piece of hydraulic engineering built directly into the mound's core. Centuries of stone-robbing, particularly for colonial-era buildings in the region and later for railway construction nearby, stripped away much of its dressed outer facing, which is why today it reads more like a low green hill than the sharp-edged stepped pyramid it originally was. Climbing to its top still gives visitors the clearest overall sense of the site's true scale.

Puma Punku's interlocking blocks

A short walk from the main group, Puma Punku is a terraced platform where Tiwanaku's stonework reaches its most precise expression: flat faces, sharp interior right angles, and matching H-shaped blocks cut so consistently that they were clearly made to a shared design template, even though — measured carefully, block by block — no two are perfectly identical to one another. Some of Puma Punku's sandstone slabs are genuinely enormous, with the largest estimated at over 100 tonnes, quarried and transported from a source many kilometres away without the wheeled carts or heavy draft animals that would later make such a task far easier elsewhere in the world.

Locked together with metal

To hold adjoining blocks firmly in place, Tiwanaku's builders cut matching sockets and connecting grooves into the stone and then poured in molten metal cramps — a copper-based alloy — that cooled and hardened in place, locking the blocks together almost like large metal staples driven between them. Analysis of surviving cramp fragments shows a deliberately mixed alloy rather than raw, unworked copper, meaning this was a planned metallurgical recipe, not an improvised fix. It's a genuinely sophisticated construction technique for its time, combining precise stone-cutting with deliberate metalworking in a single building system, and it likely helped these platforms better withstand the earthquakes that are common across the seismically active Andes region.

Human skill, not lost technology

Puma Punku's precision has made it a favourite subject for "ancient astronaut" claims circulated in popular television and online articles, but the archaeological evidence points firmly to ordinary, skilled human hands. Experimental work by archaeologists replicating Tiwanaku's stone-cutting methods with period-appropriate tools — stone hammers, abrasive sand and patient grinding — has shown the results are entirely achievable, just extremely labour-intensive and demanding of real expertise. The genuine story at Puma Punku isn't a mystery technology from elsewhere; it's the scale of organised, specialist labour a project like this demanded from a civilisation that had no writing system and no iron tools, and still pulled it off.
